look to Jesus

When things look hopeless, look to Jesus. The work of the Holy Spirit is to turn our eyes away from ourselves to Jesus. But Satan’s work is just the opposite. He is always trying to make us look at ourselves instead of Christ. When he visits, he says, “Your sins are too numerous and too great for God to pardon; you don’t pray enough’ you never repent; you’re not Holy enough.” When Satan visits you, his conversation will always be about self. He knows if he can keep you looking at yourself, you will never see Jesus.

But when the Holy Spirit speaks to us, He turns our eyes entirely away from self. He tells us that alone, we are nothing, but with Christ, we are everything. The Holy Spirit tells us that God has forgiven our sins, and God is not angry with us. He tells us when we are weak, that is when we are strong; when we think we can’t, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us; when things look impossible, it’s just a mirage because all things are possible if you only believe in the One who can do all things.

The old hymn says, “Hold to God’s unchanging hand.” But we are saved from destruction not because we are holding God’s hand; but because He is holding our hand. Remember, it is not your hold of Christ that saves you—it is Christ. The message that the Holy Spirit conveys is you should not look at yourself, not even your hand that is in Christ’s hand. You should not look to your faith but to Jesus, the source of your faith; you should not look to your hope but to Jesus, the author, and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2).

We will never find happiness by looking at the things we do for God—our prayers, our feelings, our goodness. It is not who we are but who Jesus is that gives rest to our souls. If we are to overcome Satan and have peace with God, it can only be by looking to Jesus; when our eyes are on God, He keeps us in perfect tranquility.

Keep your eyes on Jesus. Let His death, sufferings, resurrection, and intercession be constantly on your mind. When you wake in the morning, look to Him; when you lay down at night, look to Him. Let nothing come between you and Jesus. If you follow hard after Him, He will never fail you. Build your hope on nothing led than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.

Heavenly Father, when trouble shows up in my life, help me keep my eyes on You. You said You would keep my mind at peace when I focus on you. Hold my hand when I am afraid. I ask You to increase my faith because my faith is in You. Today, I expect miracles to rain down on me, for today, my eyes are on You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
