When things look hopeless, don’t panic; look to Jesus. Turn your eyes away from yourself and focus on Jesus. Satan will try to make you look at yourself rather than Christ. When Satan shows up, he will tell you that your sins are too numerous for God to pardon. He will tell you that you don’t pray enough and you never repent; you are not holy enough. Satan knows that if he can keep you looking at yourself, you will never see Jesus.
When the Holy Spirit speaks to us, He says, “Look to Jesus.” He turns our eyes entirely away from ourselves. He tells us that alone, we are nothing, but with Christ, we are everything. The Holy Spirit tells us that God has forgiven our sins, and God is not angry with us. He tells us when we are weak, we are the strongest; when we think we can’t, we can do all things through Christ who is our strength. He reminds you that all things are possible if you will only look to Jesus.
The old hymn says, “Hold to God’s unchanging hand.” But we are saved from destruction not because we are holding God’s hand; but because He is holding our hand. Remember, it is not your hold of Christ that saves you—it is Christ. The message that the Holy Spirit conveys is you should not look at yourself, not even your hand that is in Christ’s hand. You should not look to your faith but to Jesus, the source of your faith; you should not look to your hope but to Jesus, the author, and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2).
We will never find happiness by looking at the things that we do for God. It is not who we are but who Jesus is that gives rest to our souls. If you want to overcome Satan and have peace with God, looking to Jesus is the only way. When we look to Jesus, He keeps us in perfect tranquility.
Keep your eyes on Jesus. Let His death, sufferings, resurrection, and intercession be constantly on your mind. When you wake in the morning, look to Jesus. When you lay down at night, look to Him. Let nothing come between you and Jesus. If you follow hard after Him, He will never fail you. Build your hope on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
Heavenly Father, when trouble shows up in my life, help me to look to Jesus. You promised to keep my mind at peace when I focus on you. Hold my hand when I am afraid. I ask You to increase my faith because my faith is in You. Today, I expect miracles to rain down on me, for today, my eyes are on You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
