Have you ever desperately needed something? And no matter how hard you tried, it seemed as though you would never obtain the thing you desired. Are you up against a problem that seems to have no possible solution? Be encouraged to know that all things are possible to you if you only believe. Our God is a God of impossibilities, and He delights in doing the impossible for those who love Him.
The Impossible Is Achievable
There is a story in the 9th chapter of the Book of Mark, in which a father came face-to-face with the impossible (Mark 9:14-29). This father went to everyone he thought could help him. However, one was able to help him, that is until he brought his problem to Jesus. An evil spirit often tormented this father’s son. The evil spirit would often overpower his son. It would cause him to foam from the mouth, gnash his teeth, and become rigid. Many times the evil spirit attempted to kill his son by throwing him to the ground, into the water, and even into the fire. The father realized that he was powerless to help his son, so he brought him to Jesus.
When the evil spirit in the boy saw Jesus, it convulsed the boy and threw him to the ground. As the father watched his son wallow helplessly on the ground, foaming at the mouth, he said to Jesus, “If You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Jesus answered, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” When the boy’s father heard Jesus’ reply, he immediately cried out, and with tears streaming down his face he said, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
If You Can Believe
The father acknowledged that he believed Jesus could heal his son, so why would he ask Jesus to help his unbelief? Is it possible to believe and still have unbelief? The answer is yes. In difficult and desperate situations, we do it all the time. How many times have you read “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes, we are healed? (Isaiah 53:5)” Yet you might still be suffering from some type of sickness or disease.
Although your faith is in the finished work of Christ, you don’t focus your faith on believing that God loves you enough to deliver you from your impossible situation. It is not a question of whether God can do anything to help our seemingly impossible situations, but rather it is whether we can believe He will help us.
Ask God to Help You
Perhaps you have been praying in faith for healing or deliverance from an addiction and you have not seen results. Rather than become complacent or slack in your praying, just ask the Lord to help your unbelief. Do not allow doubt and despair to rob you of your faith in the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus defeated the enemy. That means he defeated poverty, sickness, addiction, and anything that comes against you. When you find yourself in an impossible situation, don’t just say, “I have faith.” A smidgen of unbelief will make your faith of non-effect. Ask God to help your unbelief and then allow Jesus to fix it.
