God Used Muddy Water to Heal Naaman

God our Healer He healed Naaman with muddy water

There is a story in 2 Kings 5 of a nobleman who sought healing from a terrible disease. His name is Naaman. He was a great man and a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy. In the days of Naaman, anyone suffering from the skin disease of leprosy was treated as an outcast. There was no cure for the disease, which gradually left a person disfigured through loss of fingers, toes, and eventually limbs.

Naaman’s wife had a young servant girl from Israel. She told Naaman’s wife about a prophet in Samaria who could heal her husband of his leprosy. When Naaman learned of it, he asked the king if he could go to Syria to find this prophet.

Naaman Seeks Healing

The king agreed and sent a letter with Naaman to the king of Israel. So Naaman departed Syria. He took with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten changes of clothing. Then he brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read. “I have sent Naaman my servant to you, that you may heal him of his leprosy.”

When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God”, that this man sends a man to me to heal him of leprosy?” The king of Israel was furious. He thought the king of Syria was seeking an opportunity to make war with him.

When Elisha, the man of God heard that the king tore his clothes, he visited the king. He asked, “Why are you upset with this man?” Please, let him come to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.” So, Naaman went with his horses and chariot and stood at the door of Elisha’s house.

However, Elisha did none of Naaman’s contrived religious rituals. Instead, he sent his servant out with this message: “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times. Your flesh will be restored to you, and you shall be clean.”

Naaman’s Preconceived Idea of God

Naaman became furious when the prophet’s servant came out. Naaman had traveled a great distance to see the man of God. He was insulted when Elisha would not come out and meet him. Then Naaman said to Elisha’s servant, “Are there not cleaner rivers than the Jourdan in Damascus? Could I not wash in one of them and be clean? So Naaman turned and walked away in a rage.

Naaman healed of leprosy

Naaman’s servants wanted to see him healed as well. They said to Naaman, “If the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you have done it? Then why not do what he says, “Wash and be cleansed”? So Naaman listened to his servants. He dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him. God restored his flesh and it became clean like that of a young boy.

Naaman had perceived how God would heal him. He said within himself, “The man of God will come out to me. Then he will call on the name of the Lord, wave his hand over the place, and heal this leprosy.” However, God does not fit into our preconceived moods. For Naaman, God used muddy water instead of a prophet and a prayer.

God Uses Whatever is Available

Some of us are like Naaman the Syrian. We want God to heal us, but we have premeditated ideas of how He will heal us. The Bible says, “God chooses the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise. He chooses the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” (1 Corinthians 1:27). Never deprecate God’s methods, for He rarely does anything the same way every time.

God uses whatever is available. Jesus used a little boy’s lunch to feed five thousand people, not including the women and children (Matthew 14:13-21). In the case of Naaman, the muddy water of the Jordan River was available. In John, chapter 9, the Bible says Jesus spat on the ground and made clay. He anointed a blind man’s eyes with it. Then He told him to go wash his face in the pool called Sent. The man came back seeing.

If God could feed thousands with two small fish and five loaves of bread; if He used muddy water and clay made from spit to heal, then know that your healing can manifest most unpredictably. Our God is a God of miracles. Don’t limit Him by trying to calculate the method He may choose to heal you. God loves you friends and He will move heaven and earth to heal you.
